Who's the Best DJ in Nassau? Part I
DJ Fines is King of all Caribbean DJ's. If you didn't already know this maybe you should ask the nearly five thousand people who attended the Heineken Green Synergy Competition Saturday night at Breezes, where the babyface Carvin Dorsett [DJ Fines] walked off with $10,000 cash, some cool gadgets and bragging rights. When the intrepid DJ undertook a relatively unknown [to Bahamians] DJ Competition last year in St. Lucia there was no fanfare or anything to announce that he had embarked on this journey. The 'journey' eventually led DJ's from throughout the Caribbean to The Bahamas for a second DJ competition with Tempo [the popular Pan Caribbean Station] tagging along to record this historic event. Dj's like Webbie D [St. Lucia], Mix Master Paulie [St. Maarten], DJ Yemmi [Aruba], battled it out against a vivid backdrop of clear, blue, Bahama waters and a sandy beach filled with a receptive crowd dancing the night away. The crowd was in awe of these fabulous performers who showcased DJ as an art form. They used elbows and knees and every other conceivable method including but not limited to dancing, flipping breaking up records and needles. They did anything to hype up the massive crowd who could not seem to get enough. The judges had to stand at some points during the show in order to get a proper view of the stage and through it all they could be seen typing in their judgements on high powered laptops [holla]. Throughout Tempo cameramen could be seen milling about on stage filming for the Pull Up Selecta programme which will give the DJ battle heavy rotation on the TV station. Earlier in the week DJ fines had said that he was ready for this battle, and armed with the support of his people and knowledge from his last battle he went in super-confident that he had more than a fighting chance. He impressed the judges with his antics. In true Gymnast fashion, Fines flipped while playing his set and managed to stick a landing and without pause resume his scritching and scratching of the latest tunes. This, in addition to the very vocal support from the Bahamian people, tipped the scale in his favor. When the battle stopped and the smoke cleared DJ Fines had emerged the winner. His jubilant mentor Dion 'Da Butcha' Knowles hoisted him high into the air celebrating his victory briefly before he was swarmed over by media personnel anxious to share his [DJ Fines'] story with the public. In an interview with Fines after his win, he said that he was grateful for the support of the Bahamian people and was looking forward to a gig in New York for Tempo. The show also saw performances by talented dancer 'Bullet' from the Caribbean Dancers. Popular local entertainers Avvy Mortimer and 'Landord' [Orlando Miller] made Cameo appearances. Avvy is known for hits such as 'Roach On My Bread' and 'Ghost Move', while 'Landlord' was the first Bahamian artist whose video, ' We Need Peace' was played on Tempo. His follow up video ' They Want To Shed My Blood' will be seen on Tempo next week. Frederick Morton, the President of Tempo, who spoke to the crowd at the end of the event, was well received by the Bahamian people and has said that one of the main aims of Tempo is to discover new talent and bring attention to them.
